Toulumne to Agnew Meadows
In 2008 Greg, Jen, Kathy and I were going to go on a backpacking trip
to celebrate Greg's thesis defense. That never happened, but it looked
like a good trip, so we decided to do it this year. It was a thru-hike
from the Mono Pass trailhead in Yosemite to Agnew Meadows in Devil's
Postpile. We planned to do it in 7 days, but when we camped at
Toulumne Meadows the night before heading out, it rained pretty hard
and our tents and packs were soaked and muddy. Instead of heading out
with wet gear into the rain, we spent a night at Motel 6 in Mammoth
and dried out and left the next day in perfect weather.
It turned out to be a pretty hard trip given the dysmal shape everyone
was in (except Kathy, but she got sick instead). It didn't get easier
from carrying the 40D and both the 17-55 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/4
lenses... I got new carrying cases from Kinesis Photo Gear which made it possible
to carry the camera on my chest, hanging from the shoulder straps. The
extra lens was attached to the pack belt. With this setup, I could
switch lenses with the pack on. If it's going to be worth hauling two
pretty heavy lenses into the backcountry, you'd better make it really
easy to use them. It worked pretty well.
