Late June 2005 the Passat was due for its 60k miles service. At this mileage, it's also recommended the timing belt be replaced, since they have a tendency to break before their scheduled replacement at 105k miles. This is a rather expensive thing do have done, and since I like to think of myself as mechanically capable, I decided to do it myself. Immediately before this, I also had a problem with rough idle and blinking malfunction light, which turned out to be a broken connection to a fuel injector.
